In 9th grade, I was extremely concerned about scores of children getting lost and being seperated from their parents due the Refugee crisis and the 2016 Chennai Floods.
Thus, my friend Aman and I set out to create an android application that could help reunite missing children with their parents using face recognition.
We created the alpha version of Relief Reunite in a hackathon: Github. This served as a basic proof of concept.
Following this, we started doing more on the ground research. We worked with Reap Benefit, Police Stations and NGOs like Sathi to understand how we could make our idea work.
To our surprise, we found that in rural India, in more than 80% of the cases, missing children aren't even reported on the first day. This greatly diminishes chances of finding them. We also found that there is no centralised and efficient missing persons database in the country.
We set out to solve this problem by making a web app.
